Artist / GIBNEY COMPANY

Through the generosity of Andrew A. Davis, a Trustee of the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund, Gibney’s resident company is being reimagined and expanded. This transformational support of $2 million over two years will turn Gibney Company into a repertory company that will showcase and inspire the phenomenal talent that exists in our community.

In the next phase of an ongoing visionary expansion of the Gibney organization, Gibney Company, formerly Gibney Dance Company, will become a commission-based, repertory company that works with renowned and rising international choreographers representing a broad range of aesthetics and techniques.

With new possibilities for commissioning original works, the Company will retain its longstanding spirit of experimentation while taking a leading role in shaping a more robust landscape for contemporary dance in New York, and beyond. The Company, which will double in size, will perform regular seasons in New York and tour nationally and make its debut at The Joyce Theater in November 2021.

GAUTHIER
Dance Company

Stuttgart, GERMANY

Learn More

Artistic Director:

Eric Gauthier

Artist / GAUTHIER DANCE COMPANY

Gauthier Dance is a young, dynamic company of 16 highly individual, versatile dancers, directed by the dancer, choreographer and musician Eric Gauthier. The Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart presents contemporary dance by Gauthier and internationally renowned choreographers such as Mauro Bigonzetti, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Itzik Galili, Paul Lightfoot / Sol León and Hans van Manen. Set up in October 2007, Gauthier Dance established itself in the German dance scene with record speed and has become an international brand. During the first years, the company's acclaim was based on their original, humorous bills that also attracted a big young audience. Today, the program is every bit as accessible but offers a wider choice of styles and moods. In summer 2010, Gauthier Dance saw the successful world première of their first full-length piece, Christian Spuck's POPPEA // POPPEA, which was included among the 10 top productions of the season 2009/10 by the British specialist magazine Dance Europe and earned Spuck the German Theater Prize THE FAUST 2011. Two years later, the "German Academy Award" once again went to a member of Gauthier Dance: Anna Süheyla Harms won THE FAUST 2013 as Best Performer Dance. The company has a reputation for breaking new ground.

“By far the most impressive, original, and brilliantly executed dance was the world premiere of Sonya Tayeh’s Unveiling, danced by former New York City Ballet principal Robbie Fairchild, American Ballet Theatre principal Stella Abrera, and ABT dancer Gabe Stone Shayer.”

- Jerry Hochman of CRITICAL DANCE

Unveiling navigates the search within oneself to shed. Peeling off the layers one by one until there is a depth of rawness, and from within that rawness we seek anew. Through this recalibration there will be pain, and there will be things we must leave behind. We keep peeling, then we ask: How do we travel through this with grace? What will we find? Unveiling is a search. It is a seeking with deep ethereal wonder as exquisite sound of Moses Sumney leads the way, guiding us on our journey

ALONE, TOGETHER

An interactive concert experience as a first listen to Feist’s next record

(IN DEVELOPMENT)

Production Designer: Rob Sinclair

Learn More
Project / ALONE, TOGETHER

Conceptualized by multi-Platinum artist Feist, Alone, Together seeks to reimagine the prescribed roles of performer and audience, ultimately creating an experience that’s egalitarian and radically communal. Opening in a completely barren space on a near-to-traditional solo set from Feist, Alone, Together’s audience members find themselves surrounded by projections and musicians, and absorbed into the music as an everyman choir. The show will discreetly arc from intimate to ritualistic, bathing the audience in 5.1 surround before conscripting them into participation and making them into the very material of the performance on 60’ long projection screens.

Featuring newly written songs from Feist, partly created in response to Emily Wilson’s recent translation of Homer’s “Odyssey,” Alone, Together examines the commonality of human experience across all imposed divides. In its poetic dismantling of that separation—and its revelation of previously unexplored pathways to truly vulnerable connection—the show will offer a transport- ive meditation on solitude and community, isolation and togetherness. Widely recognized as one of the most compelling vocalists and songwriters in her genre, Leslie Feist is a 4-time Grammy nominee and an 11-time Juno Award-winning solo artist.

MAI Advocates for social change while expressing how vital dance can be”

- The Atlantic

Third Coast Percussion joins forces with the groundbreaking choreography of Movement Art Is (co-founded by Lil Buck and Jon Boogz) for an intimate, evening-length program that explores the duality of human nature. At once intensely personal and fiercely virtuosic, two disparate styles of street dance blend seamlessly with new music by Jlin and Tyondai Braxton, as well as Third Coast Percussion’s critically-acclaimed arrangements of Philip Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia.

TOURING COMPANY: TCP (4 percussionists) will be joined on stage by movement artists Ron Myles and Quentin Robinson, 2 dancers hand-picked by MAI who specialize in the movement styles championed by the choreographers. One additional production support person may tour with the project to call light and audio cues. PRODUCTION: The project is being designed for a variety of performance venues, from concert halls to proscenium-stage theaters. The project is also suitable to be presented in the center of a performance space, with seating surrounding the stage. Minimum stage size 20’ wide by 24’ long by 15’ high.
